The Outing matchmaking festival – The Hydro Hotel

Clare, head to The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival! All that love lust? One lady I met told me she was from Effin Kilmallock. Suffice it to say it is our new favourite place name! Sunday morning dancing at the Hydro Hotel With dancing in several venues from morning until late we were spoiled for choice but the Hydro Hotel on the hill was where we spent the night and had great fun. A great mix of young and old, several bars and live music with DJs, there was something and someone! A great traditional venue with great staff, we had a mighty night throwing some shapes to Kentucky singer Buck Taylor and his brilliant band and refreshingly, we were never stuck for dance partners. We were up early on Sunday morning as the pubs were full again, with live music and many punters dancing off the hangovers, or working on new ones! Though he was quickly onto the next candidate, so perhaps not!

It was a gigantic, hormonal mating ritual. Apparently there are no maximum occupancy limits in Ireland. Competing music filtered out of the pubs. Not only that, a local man set up his sound system in the plaza so older couples could dance in peace. It also attracted couples who wanted to relive their youth and horny bachelor farmers out for a good shagging. This cracked me up.

Old fashioned and nice This hotel is old fashioned and nice, brown wood with olde worlde pictures on the walls, it had a very welcoming feel to it. We went with a coach party, and found the food was good, the fish especially, Staff were very helpful, mostly foreign nationals , but friendly with good English, all nice people. We were fortunate as our room was at the back,as it was the Matchmaker festival, which we didn,t know anything about, and Lisdoonvarna buzzed including our hotel, with music, and dancing.

In fact everyone was singing or dancing, great atmosphere. We didn,t hear anything, I know others didn,t get any sleep because of noise from reviews. We travelled with Just Go Holidays, which is our fifth time with them, and apart from the hotel which WAS great, the holiday was a shambles. No time to wash or change in the evenings as tours far to long, and ill planned. We didn,t have time to see Galway, 1 hour is not enough, just got dropped off, no idea where to go, had time for a drink, back on coach 7 half hours with no food or drink since breakfast at 8am.

This was the general pattern. Coach driver spent over 2 hours trying to find the hotel in Dublin, even with a Sat Nav, so no time to wash or change again, straight into dinner.

You might have read his column in the Irish Times or come across his blog online. Graham, who is more hipster than hippie, was in Culture Box last week to talk about his book A Year of Festivals in Ireland. The idea came to him after a rejected mortgage application. Disappointed and angry, he asked himself why was he letting a financial institute with a worse credit rating than his own tell him what to do? He also started to write about it — first on the blog, then he was asked to write a column for The Ticket in the Irish Times, and then the book for New Island.

Graham said that he had never written anything before starting the blog, and one of the joys of writing was that he discovered how pleasing a well-chosen simile could be.

I would recommend traveling or studying abroad to everyone if I could. What were your expectations for your year in Ireland? I had many expectations before moving there on my own, friendless in a new city but with the English language and travel experience under my belt. I expected many things: What was your experience in Ireland actually like? The program was filled with almost half Americans and half Irish, with one Hungarian and one Canadian. Although I was unprepared for the amount of other Americans that also had the same idea to study in Dublin, it made sense as it was an English speaking country, and not a place that you feel too culture shocked.

Ideas that move the world.

But this convenience of friends situated conveniently in Dublin, means that we have yet to venture anywhere else in Ireland. Our typical 48 hour trip to the Emerald Isle includes a quick flight in well, it used to be a quick flight from London…from China, not so much , a drive straight to the heart of Dublin, lots of eating and drinking and chatting, and a quick flight out.

Next week, we change all that. There are actually a ton of resources out there that cover how to road trip in Ireland. There are almost too many resources. Is that a thing? Should we go north or south? How much should we drive each day? Should we stick just to AirBnB rentals or hotels or a combination of both?
